“Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world”

'As a lady and a gentleman were out driving in Charlotte Street, Covent Garden yesterday, heavy shower drove them to take shelter in the office of the Superintendent Registrar there, and in the confusion of the moment he married them. The lady was an Irish lady named Miss Payne-Townshend and the gentleman was George Bernard Shaw'.

"People keep asking me why I do not write my own biography.

I reply that I am not at all interesting biographically. I have never killed anybody... Now I have had no heroic adventures. Things have not happened to me: on the contrary it is I who have happened to the world; and all that happening has taken the form of books and plays.

Read them or spectate them and you have my whole story: the rest is only leather and prunella, breakfast, lunch, dinner, buttoning and unbuttoning, sleeping and wakening and washing, my routine being just the same as everybody's routine
."

Acolo, în sătucul Ayot Saint Lawrence, a scris Man and Superman, Major Barbara, Pygmalion şi altele.

People are wise in proportion not to their experience but to their capacity for experience.

The test of a man or woman's breeding is how they behave in a quarrel.

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them.

The only way to avoid being miserable is not to have enough leisure to wonder whether you are happy or not.

The reasonable people adapt themselves to the world; the unreasonable ones persist in trying to adapt the world to themselves.

The only service a friend can really render is to keep up your courage by holding up to you a mirror in which you can see a noble image of yourself.

Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.

Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children.

You have to choose (as a voter) between trusting to the natural stability of gold and the natural stability of the honesty and intelligence of the members of the Government. And, with due respect for these gentlemen, I advise you, as long as the Capitalist system lasts, to vote for gold.

A lifetime of happiness! No man alive could bear it: it would be hell on earth.

You think that you are Ann’s suitor; that you are the pursuer and she the pursued; that it is your part to woo, to persuade, to prevail, to overcome. Fool: it is you who are the pursued, the marked-down quarry, the destined prey.

You see things; and you say “Why?” But I dream things that never were; and I say “Why not?”

If history repeats itself, and the unexpected always happens, how incapable must Man be of learning from experience!

Better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world.
